ERODE: MLA Raja Krishnan released 1.25 lakh fish seeds into four lakes in Andhiyur assembly segment here on Wednesday to help local fishermen make a living.
Fishing activities had completely come to a standstill in the lakes, including Andhiyur and Ketti Samudram, as they had gone dry in the past five years due to severe drought.
K R Balachandran, a fisherman, said, “Many of us had gone to neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Kerala for fishing to make a living.” Some of the fishermen were, meanwhile, forced to work as farm labourers in surrounding villages.
The lakes, however, sprang back into life a bountiful southwest and northeast monsoon last year. Following this, the local fishermen had requested the district administration and the fisheries department to release fish seeds into the lakes.
The fisheries department subsequently issued 1.25 lakh fish seeds worth Rs 2 lakh to the district administration, which invited MLA Raja Krishnan as chief guest to release the same into the lakes. S Kandasamy, another fisherman, said, “The fish seeds will grow within a few weeks and then fishing activities could be resumed in the lakes.”
